Nov 30th – Showers galore

We set off early on an adventurous task to the SW, but we soon found cloud base to be low and reluctant to rise, also the cu that formed just kept growing until we were slowly surrounded by showers and thunderstorms. In the build up we had travelled nearly 300km to the SW. The gaps to cross on the way back were enormous and for the first time we had to start the engine. We did this over Kalkrand Pan, somewhere we could have landed if the engine didn’t start for some reason, it did and a few minutes later we were back in strong lift. The picture shows us skirting round a boiling thunderstorm near Helmeringhausen.

The forecasts are quite sophisticated and detailed, however, the underlying data is often poor which gives rise to some surprises, like today.
